I didn’t fall in love with you the way one falls asleep. I fell in love with you the way one dies. Because I knew that loving you was in my future. It was imminent. It was going to happen no matter what I did or said to stop it. I’ve lived my whole life knowing that one day I would completely lose myself to you. And like death, one eventually accepts it. So when it happened I was prepared. I welcomed it, the way I hope I’ll one day welcome death and be able to smile when my eyes close for the last time.

The person you love is not the same as they were when you first started loving them and they are not the same as they will be when you die. Love must be adaptive. Love must be smart enough and strong enough to survive constant change. Love must not be rigid.

“With every act of self care your authentic self gets stronger, and the critical, fearful mind gets weaker. Every act of self care is a powerful declaration: I am on my side; each day I am more and more on my side.”— Susan Weiss Berry (via embracingwild)
